It breaks the fourth wall quite a lot and has many references to the history of video games. There's like 15 different genres in one, but most of the time it plays like a classic 2D Zelda adventure. I have my gaming work cut out for me during this ongoing stretch of off time!Įvoland 2 is a recent favorite of mine. And Okami since everyone always talks about that. (My headcanon is that Neutopia's City in the Sky and Skyloft are the same place.) It came out before A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, but the game feels more like those games than LoZ. I didn't like the second game enough to finish it, but certainly the first Neutopia is a very solid, if linear, clone of the original Zelda. Neutopia I and II for Turbografx-16/Wii U Virtual Console. Also, Lost in Shadow on Wii is a very high quality game of this type (more of a platformer than an action-RPG, but your character levels up as you progress through the game). Faxanadu used to be on the Wii Shop Channel, but not so much these days. Still going with sidescrolling Zelda II-style games, consider Faxanadu and Battle for Olympus on NES. You could check it out without much risk. Zelda II's a much better game in terms of combat, imo, but Ys III for SNES is pretty inexpensive. It's a sidescroller that is much like Zelda II. Grow plants! Craft stuff! Improve relationships with villagers! Then go out and dungeon crawl! I hope the Switch re-release gets more people playing it, 'cause it's a really fun game.Īs they indicated, John knows way more about Ys than I do. If we stretch things a bit further then Rune Factory 4 (I haven't played any of the others) is very much Zelda-meets- Story of Seasons.
They're not as long as Zelda games, generally, and have less of an emphasis on exploration, but are well-worth checking out.īy the same company (Nihon-Falcom) we also have Zwei II: The Ilvard Insurrection, which is a bit further from a traditional Zelda game, but still keeps top-down combat and dungeon exploration as key components, only with a kind of 1920s-pulp-adventure-meets-JRPG-fantasy style, with some fun character interactions. The Ys games are overall a lot of fun, and are kinda like if someone took A Link to the Past and sped up the combat (well, OK, the combat in 1 and 2 is at about Zelda-speed, but the rest are much faster). The release history here is weird and complicated, but if we restrict ourselves to Ys games that are available in English on modern PCs/Consoles then 1, 2, The Oath in Felghana, The Ark of Napishtim, SEVEN, and Origins are all quite Zelda-like, with the more recent Memories of Celceta and Lacrimosa of DANA being less so and closer to the Tales games. Hazelnut bastille hasnt come out yet but looks amazing. Some others: soulblazer, terranigma, binding of isaac, hyper light drifter, dark siders, dark souls (more modern creepy zelda 1) if you want more wind waker this comes pretty close. Oceanhorn - basically another really short but solid one. Okami - i felt like this game was inspired heavily by zelda then twilight princess in turn was inspired by it. sometimes you can get it on switch for $1 on sale. very reminiscent of lttp.Īnodyne - pretty simple gameplay but it's more on the weird side. havent played the sequel yet, but im sure it's great.īlossom tales - got this on switch and blew through it pretty quickly. Ittle dew - this game is pretty short but it has some amazing puzzles and the humor to it is great. it has some issues, but the puzzles can be really really tough.
Evoland 2 maana locations series#
let me know of any others.Īlundra - (guy in my avatar) this was basically what i felt like a follow-up to lttp would be like if they kept the series 2D. i can think of quite a few off the top of my head. I went back quite a few pages trying to find a thread for zelda-esque games.
